1. The course works really slowly, what should I do? (system requirements)

Usually, 2-3 year old computers, which open normal Internet websites, are sufficient for the use of our course.

A detailed description of the requirements:

  • Processor: min. 1 GHz
  • RAM: min. 512 MB
  • Browser: Firefox 3.x , Opera 10.x, Google Chrome or newer
  • Applications: Adobe Flash 9.x (or newer), JAVA
  • Additional equipment: headphones or speakers and a microphone
  • Constant Internet connection
  • Free space on your hard drive: 100 MB

We also recommend clearing your web browser cache - instructions here.

2. I forgot my password, what should I do?

Use the “forgot your password?” option that is underneath “log in”.

The system will ask you to give an e-mail address (the one that was used while registering). An e-mail with a link will be sent (it might end up in the SPAM folder).  When you click the link, you will automatically log into the website. You can then change the password in the ”my account” tab, after which you should log out and in again (using the new password).

3. I am having trouble with opening a game/recording.

Check if the errors occur on other computer. If not, the reason for this could be:
  • an old web browser (we recommend the latest version of Google Chrome, Opera or Firefox)
  • an expired version of JAVA or Flash (both of these programs are free and available online here: JavaFlash)
  • the lack of sound or video browsers

We also recommend clearing your web browser cache - instructions here.

4. How do I record my voice in the dialogues?

The sound panel should look like this:

If the dialogues look different please make sure that you have the latest version of Java and Flash.

When you open the dialogue for the first time a warning will pop up:

Please click "Run" - or else the voice recognition application will not work properly. If you tick the option "Always trust content from this publisher." the warning will not appear the next time you open the dialogues.

If recording the voice works, but the voice is not recognized correctly please click the play button (next to the red circle) to play the recording. If the recording is poor quality (ex. you can hear noise in the background) you can try locating the microphone in the laptop and speak closer to it or in its direction.

If the reader's recordings open in a new window instead of the same one maybe your browser has a plug-in that blocks Flash installed - please open the website in a different browser or temporarily turn off all plug-ins.

This is how a sound panel should look like

5. I don't know how to start using the course.

You should follow the order of the tabs. However, if you wish, you can primarily focus on the tabs that interest you more (e.g. elements containing English – grammar, word lists).

6. I don't understand the exercise instructions.

After placing the cursor over the instructions (without clicking) you will see the English translation. When you complete several exercises you will get used to the instructions being written in a foreign language and you won’t need the translation anymore.

7. I made a mistake in an exercise. Where can I find the correct answer?

Place your cursor over your answer (without clicking on it) and the correct answer will appear.

8. How can I use the German symbol box?

The box can be moved to any place on the screen with the cursor. To insert a symbol from the box, click on it.

9. The course is too difficult! I don't know the vocabulary in the films/photolessons.

Our course is based on language immersion. This means that you learn the language the same way small children do – by absorbing it.
Don’t worry if you don’t understand everything at first and you need English translations. Imagine that you are abroad and that you are surrounded only by German native speakers. This is a situation in which you learn the language most effectively. Don’t translate each word, try to get accustomed to the language and absorb it with all of your senses. Don’t get discouraged and you’ll see how fast you’ll make progress!
